This is a rare special produced in 1992 to promote the release of the Complete '50s Masters box set. Tracks 1-4 are the four-part special, 5-7 are promos, and 8-16 brief snippets of interviews on specific topics.
I hope you have fun with it!

ReplyDeleteIn August, 1977, John Lennon said "for us, Elvis died when he went into the Army". Based on that statement alone, my Elvis collection was only ever 'Sun Sessions' and 'Gold Records Vol.1'. That's it. About six months ago, I stumbled onto something called 'Alternate Masters' and now I can't get the needle out of my arm. Help!! ...but, SERIOUSLY, Elvis was a very awesome guy. He had manners. He was never anti-ANYTHING. He LOVED his mother. He was always so well composed and poised as a person...very much role model material. I think any Nixon affiliation was FEAR INDUCED. He could handle a lot more pressure than most AND HE DID! I've always been proud of him for having agreed to meet The Beatles (Benedict Canyon, Hollywood 1965) when he was SO OUT-NUMBERED.And MOST importantly, I have only just discovered what a truly awesome singer he was. I'm so behind!!! Thanx, for listening.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea for a series!! Nice work, Pop. Thanks
ReplyDeleteKwai, make sure you check out, SOON, the DVD of Elvis' legendary 1968 "Comeback Special", specifically the 3-disc Deluxe Edition (NOT the "Special Edition") that has the complete "sit-down" and "stand-up" concerts, Elvis head-to-toe in leather and completely back in his power like a man unleashed. It's his first time before a live audience since before the Army (he'd been in Hollywood making crappy movies ever since). The CD of the sit-down show is great too; it's called Tiger Man and is a must-have. And if you're ready for the graduate course, read Peter Guralnick's two-volume biography, Last Train to Memphis and Careless Love, some of the best music writing there is, and incredibly moving. It's great to have your contributions here - thanks.
ReplyDeleteFrank - you're welcome, and thanks for the email too. I'll be in touch.
I've just discovered your blog, and would love to listen to some of this amazing music (particularly the Mary Margaret O'Hara and the Patti Smith) but something very odd is going on with Megaupload that seems to be blocking people in the UK from using it - is there any possibility of putting the files elsewhere so that people hit by this are able to enjoy the files? Cheers, M
ReplyDeleteHi Pop. Thanks for this great Elvis item. Can't wait to explore the rest of you site. Really appreciate your generosity and kindness. All the best to you. Iggymo
ReplyDeleteThanks, Iggy, hope you find lots you like here.
ReplyDeleteAnon, will you do me a favor and check back with me in a few days or a week to let me know if this issue with Megaupload persists? I haven't seen anything else about it yet and wonder if it's only a temporary problem. Hope so! If not, let me know and I'll be happy to set up alternate Mediafire links for at least some of the material here.
Oh, and Iggy, hello from a fellow Oregonian (Portland)! Saw it on your Blogger profile.
